A-Pillar of the Puerto Rican Community
Established in 1987, the San Juan Community Library (SJCL) has steadfastly served as a cornerstone for education and cultural enrichment in Puerto Rico. As one of the few lending libraries on the island, SJCL offers invaluable resources to children, young adults, and adults from diverse backgrounds, fostering a love for reading and lifelong learning.
A Registered 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization
As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, SJCL promotes enthusiasm for reading, research, and cultural enrichment. The library relies on a volunteer staff, a part-time executive director, and an active board of directors to manage its day-to-day operations, exemplifying a community-driven approach to service.
Extensive Collections and Services
SJCL houses over 32,000 hard-copy books and 7,000 digital titles, including ebooks and audiobooks, catering to various literary interests. Members have 24/7 access to the library’s digital branch, allowing them to enjoy literature from the comfort of their homes. In addition to its vast collection, SJCL provides complimentary Wi-Fi, computers with internet access, printing services, and designated meeting and study spaces.
Diverse Programs and Activities
SJCL offers a variety of programs designed to engage the community. The library hosts art classes for children and teens led by experienced instructors, fostering creativity and artistic expression. Adults can participate in workshops and classes, including language courses and wellness sessions, though some programs may require a nominal fee. The library also organizes annual events such as book and bake sales, holiday parties, and the National Library Week BBQ, creating community bonding and support opportunities.
Community Collaborations and Volunteer Opportunities
Collaboration is at the heart of SJCL’s mission—the library partners with local schools, cultural organizations, and volunteers to enhance its services and reach. Volunteers play a crucial role in daily operations, from assisting patrons to organizing events. One volunteer shared, “This is a place where you can make a difference and contribute to the community.”
A Legacy of Growth and Resilience
From its humble beginnings, SJCL has evolved into a vital community hub. Despite challenges, including natural disasters and economic fluctuations, the library has demonstrated resilience, continually expanding its collections and services to meet the community’s needs. Its sustained growth is a testament to the unwavering support of volunteers, donors, and patrons.
