Advocating for a Future Free from Violence
In Puerto Rico, a pioneering nonprofit is making strides to ensure that every child and youth can thrive in a safe, nurturing environment. Red por los Derechos de la Niñez y la Juventud de Puerto Rico (NiñezPR) was founded with one mission: to transform the lives of children impacted by violence and neglect. By promoting systemic change, this organization stands as a beacon of hope for families and communities across the archipelago.
“Our comprehensive support aims to not only heal trauma but also empower families to thrive.” NiñezPR
A Vision Rooted in Advocacy
Established in 2014 by social worker and human rights defender Marcos Santana Andújar, NiñezPR has become a cornerstone in addressing child abuse in Puerto Rico.

Through three core programmatic pillars—direct services and innovation, training and technical assistance, and public policy advocacy—NiñezPR is dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate abuse. These efforts are crucial in light of alarming statistics: over 14,500 reports of child abuse were filed with the Department of Family in 2023 alone.
Programs that Heal and Empower
NiñezPR’s programs are designed to prevent abuse, preserve families, and empower young survivors of violence. Their multifaceted approach includes:
- Head Start & Early Head Start: Supporting early childhood development to prepare children for lifelong success.
- Casa Ramón Alternatives Center: A first-of-its-kind housing program offering crisis support, rapid housing, legal aid, and social work to homeless youth aged 18-24.
- Two Generations Center (2 Gen): Integrating services for families, including parenting workshops, mental health services, financial training, and nutrition programs.
- Community Dining Room Luz María Alvarado: Serving 900 hot meals weekly to children and families while addressing food insecurity.
- Youth Advocacy Academy: Empowering young leaders to advocate for their rights, draft legislation, and influence public policy.

A Ripple Effect Across the Island
NiñezPR’s impact extends beyond individual families. Over 5,600 families currently benefit from their programs, and partnerships with organizations like Johnson & Johnson have enabled them to implement enduring initiatives, such as computer labs for children in shelters. From their Emergency Response efforts during Hurricane Fiona to their community-focused centers, NiñezPR has become a lifeline for many.

NiñezPR empowers parents with practical tools to break the cycle of abuse through their Parenting Skills Workshops. These workshops are designed to equip parents with evidence-based techniques that promote healthy, positive relationships with their children. Participants learn strategies for positive discipline, replacing punitive actions with constructive methods that encourage growth and understanding. Stress management techniques are also a focal point, as managing parental stress is key to creating a stable home environment. Additionally, parents are taught effective communication methods, fostering open and empathetic dialogue with their children. By addressing the root causes of harmful behaviors and providing actionable, nurturing alternatives, these workshops not only prevent abuse but also build stronger, more resilient family bonds that support the holistic development of children.
Be the Change: Support Puerto Rico’s Children and Youth
Donating to Red por los Derechos de la Niñez y la Juventud de Puerto Rico is more than a charitable act—it’s an investment in a transformative mission that directly benefits thousands of children and families across the island. Contributions help fund critical programs like crisis housing, early childhood education, parenting workshops, and youth advocacy initiatives. Donations ensure the organization can expand its reach, innovate new programs, and provide emergency responses during crises.

When you give, you’re not only supporting a child’s safety and well-being but also contributing to systemic change that strengthens families and builds healthier communities. Whether it’s a one-time gift or recurring support, your generosity creates a ripple effect that impacts generations to come.
