Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR), a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution, has long been recognized for its strong commitment to STEM disciplines, particularly engineering, architecture, and business administration. The university is at the forefront of integrating immersive technology into academic life today. In a bold step to reimagine traditional learning, PUPR has developed a Virtual Simulation Laboratory. In this space, students engage in experiential learning using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools that replicate real-world scenarios.
What Are VR and AR—and Why Do They Matter?
Virtual Reality creates a fully simulated environment where users can interact with a digital world using headsets, controllers, and headphones. In contrast, Augmented Reality enhances the real world with digital elements—overlaying graphics or data on physical surroundings. While VR immerses the user in entirely new settings, AR complements the real world with contextual content.
These technologies are transforming education. Rather than reading about color blindness, students can experience it through VR. Instead of passive lectures on human anatomy, they can enter a virtual surgical suite and practice procedures in a risk-free environment. This hands-on, sensory-rich approach fosters greater empathy, knowledge retention, and problem-solving skills.

Inside the Virtual Simulation Lab
The university’s Virtual Simulation Lab is equipped with cutting-edge software and platforms, many sourced through Steam VR, including:
- Experience: Colorblindness – A powerful tool for understanding how color perception differs across individuals, enhancing empathy in design and health professions.
- Futuclass Education – Interactive chemistry and physics lessons designed with educators to boost academic performance through gamified modules.
- MedicalHolodeck – A VR anatomy suite with AI-based image segmentation and surgical simulations for health sciences students.
- Short Circuit VR – An electronics lab simulator where students can learn and experiment with circuitry without physical risks.
- Wraith VR – A realistic surgical training environment that replicates knee replacement procedures, vital for aspiring healthcare professionals.
“We want our students to think beyond the textbook,” says Saul Castellanos. “Through VR, they can build, test, and explore like never before.”
The lab’s offerings, from architectural walkthroughs to chemical lab simulations, mirror various industries, making the experience applicable across multiple fields.
A Commitment to Access and Collaboration
Beyond the lab, PUPR is committed to making education more accessible. Their digital platform integrates virtual classrooms using tools like Blackboard, enabling students across the island and diaspora to benefit from a Politécnica education.
The university also partners with international institutions such as the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) to offer joint programs, research opportunities, and future Ph.D. collaborations.
