A Mission Rooted in Education and Conservation
The Museo de Historia Natural Ciudad de Aguadilla is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to educating visitors about Puerto Rico’s natural history. Through geology, paleontology, and marine science, the museum provides insight into the island’s transformation.
Founded by the Torres Ramírez family, long-time residents of Aguadilla, the museum has gained support from esteemed professionals, including Dr. Hernán Santos from the University of Puerto Rico and Dr. Jorge Vélez Juarbe from the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. Their collective vision is to foster a deeper understanding of Puerto Rico’s origins long before human settlement.
Official Recognition and Commitment to Education
The Puerto Rico Department of State officially incorporated the museum as the Museo de Historia Natural y Conservación de Puerto Rico in August 2022. This legal recognition ensures transparency, accountability, and a strong foundation for educational programming.
Strategic alliances with the City of Aguadilla, universities, private institutions, and the local community strengthen the museum’s mission. By focusing on geology and paleontology, the museum serves as an educational hub for exploring paleontological specimens, sedimentary rocks, and marine deposits that reflect ancient sea levels.
Immersive Exhibits and Research Collaborations
The museum is curating exhibits that showcase Puerto Rico’s geological history. Initial displays will focus on minerals, rock types, tectonic history, earthquakes, and volcanoes, later transitioning to sedimentary rocks and fossils and their evolutionary connection to present-day Puerto Rico.
To ensure an engaging visitor experience, the museum has partnered with Aldrich Pears to develop a comprehensive Master Plan, which includes conceptual floor plans, interpretive resources, and community engagement strategies. Collaborative agreements with the University of Puerto Rico Geology Department, Red Sísmica, and other research organizations will enhance the museum’s exhibits with valuable scientific contributions.
As President Maribel Ramírez Toledo states, “We are proud to work in this united effort for our natural history, our island’s beautiful resources, and our legacy to our children.”
Economic and Cultural Impact
Beyond its educational mission, the Museo de Historia Natural Ciudad de Aguadilla plays a significant role in economic and cultural development. Museums generate employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and attract tourists, contributing to a city’s overall prosperity.
By bringing in visitors, the museum fuels the growth of Puerto Rico’s tourism industry. Increased foot traffic leads to more lavish spending on accommodations, dining, transportation, and other services, further supporting local businesses.
