Over 50 Years of Artistic Education
For over five decades, La Liga de Arte de San Juan has been a driving force in visual arts education in Puerto Rico. This nonprofit institution fosters creativity, artistic expression, and cultural preservation for all ages and skill levels.
Bridging Art and Community in San Juan
In 1967, Leah Cohen, an American resident of Puerto Rico, made a radio announcement calling for individuals interested in creating an art student collective in San Juan, similar to the Art Students League of New York. Eighteen people responded, meeting at the Las Nereidas School in Santurce. This initial group grew over time, laying the foundation for what is now La Liga de Arte.
Shaping Generations of Puerto Rican Artists
La Liga de Arte is dedicated to making visual arts education accessible to all. Through workshops, exhibitions, and scholarships, it nurtures artistic talent and strengthens Puerto Rico’s creative community. As a nonprofit, it also operates a gallery, publishes artistic research, and hosts cultural events that engage and inspire.
Explore, Learn, and Create at La Liga de Arte
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, La Liga de Arte offers immersive workshops in drawing, painting, and Japanese caricature. Available both in-person and online, these classes provide hands-on instruction from experienced artists, fostering creativity in a supportive environment.
As highlighted on their social media:
“In our Japanese Caricature workshops, you’ll learn the techniques and foundational knowledge to create characters in the Japanese style.”
Empowering Artists Through Education and Collaboration
Collaboration is at the heart of La Liga de Arte’s impact. In partnership with the Escuela de Comunicación Ferré Rangel at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, the institution helped produce the documentary La Liga de Arte: 50 Years Forging Generations of Artists, showcasing its rich history and cultural influence. These partnerships continue to expand opportunities for emerging artists across Puerto Rico.
Old San Juan’s Cultural Landmark for the Arts
Beyond workshops, La Liga organizes exhibitions and special events showcasing local and international talent. A recent example is the exhibition BIOMA by artist Jeannette Betancourt, which explored the intersection of art and nature.
Keeping Puerto Rican Creativity Alive
La Liga de Arte thrives through community involvement. Visitors can immerse themselves in exhibitions, enroll in transformative workshops, or volunteer their time to support the institution’s mission. Contributions—whether through donations or participation—help sustain Puerto Rico’s vibrant artistic culture.
As stated in their mission:
“La Liga de Arte is a nonprofit educational institution committed to the teaching of visual arts and the support of local artists.”
