Taller Comunidad La Goyco, located in the heart of Santurce, Puerto Rico, is not just a community space, it’s a symbol of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural resilience. Born from the collective efforts of local residents, the center has become a vital hub for education, health, and cultural programming in the Machuchal and Loíza Street sectors.
A Vision of Empowerment and Solidarity
“We empower our community in a supportive and democratic manner, developing and creating education, culture, and health programs,” says the organization. This mission speaks volumes about the center’s commitment to its neighborhood and its people. Founded with the idea that communities should have the tools to shape their futures, Taller Comunidad La Goyco seeks to highlight the historical, social, and cultural richness of the area.
As the organization’s mission statement declares, it is anchored in the diversity that defines the community, embracing inclusivity and the highest ideals of coexistence. “We were born of community management, anchored in the diversity that characterizes our environment and committed to the highest ideals of coexistence,” says one of the center’s founders.
A Cultural Hub with Deep Roots
The story of Taller Comunidad La Goyco begins in 2015 when residents of Santurce’s Machuchal and Loíza Street neighborhoods came together to reclaim and repurpose the former Pedro G. Goyco School building. Through grassroots organizing and a shared vision, the building was transformed into a vibrant community cultural center.

Today, the space serves as a testament to the power of collective action and community-driven change. With workshops for artists, offices for various projects, and a range of public programming, La Goyco is an essential part of the cultural fabric of Santurce.
Programs for Everyone
Taller Comunidad La Goyco’s programming is as diverse as the community it serves. From educational workshops to health initiatives, the organization ensures that there’s something for everyone.
-
Psychoanalytic Clinic for the Community
For many, access to mental health services can be a challenge. La Goyco offers a unique psychoanalytic clinic where individuals, whether children, adolescents, or adults—can receive therapy regardless of their financial situation. The cost is based on a suggested donation, making it accessible to those without a medical plan or financial resources.
Led by Dr. María Victoria García Cingolani, a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, along with graduate psychology students, the clinic uses language as the primary tool to help individuals understand and articulate their emotional struggles.
To schedule an appointment, community members can text 787-307-2517.

Educational and Cultural Workshops
La Goyco is also home to numerous educational initiatives, such as its popular music and dance classes. Every Wednesday, the space offers Plena and Bomba dance classes, keeping the island’s traditional rhythms alive and accessible to all. Each class carries a suggested donation of $10, fostering a sense of community engagement while keeping the arts alive in Santurce.

La Tiendita de la Goyco
In addition to its educational and health services, La Goyco runs a charming community shop. La Tiendita de la Goyco showcases the work of local artists and artisans, as well as second-hand treasures. The shop operates Wednesday through Saturday from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm, providing a space for the neighborhood’s creative talent to thrive and share their work with the wider community.
Taller Comunidad La Goyco also supports creative entrepreneurs by offering spaces for workshops, rehearsals, and events. The music room, art room, and dance room are available for rent by the hour, providing local artists and groups with affordable spaces to practice or hold events.
Celebrating Community Through Festivals
Taller Comunidad La Goyco has a strong tradition of hosting vibrant cultural events that bring the community together. One such highlight was the Tercer Tito Matos Fest, held in June 2024. This festival celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Puerto Rico, featuring music, art, and community activities. The event paid tribute to the legendary Tito Matos, a master of Plena, one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved traditional music genres.
The festival brought together local musicians, dancers, and artists for lively performances and cultural exchange, reinforcing La Goyco’s role as a hub for preserving and celebrating Puerto Rican traditions.
These types of events reflect the core mission of Taller Comunidad La Goyco: fostering a sense of community through shared cultural experiences. With a focus on local talent and tradition, the organization continues to offer dynamic programs and initiatives that support the social, educational, and cultural development of Santurce’s residents.
