Fundación Stefano is a nonprofit organization in Puerto Rico with a mission rooted in hope and transformation. Established in memory of Stefano Steenbakkers Betancourt, a young organ donor whose selfless act inspired an island, the Foundation is dedicated to supporting, educating, and raising awareness about organ, tissue, cornea, and bone marrow donation. Stefano’s legacy continues to shine as the organization works tirelessly to promote healing, prevent violence, and offer critical support to grieving families.
A Mission Born from Tragedy
At the tender age of 16, Stefano made the choice to become an organ donor. His untimely passing just six months later, in June 2012, left an indelible mark on Puerto Rico, as his gift of life brought hope to countless others. Fundación Stefano’s mission is to ensure that this legacy continues to transform lives. As they affirm, “We have to leave a legacy.”
This 501(c)(3) nonprofit operates with a clear vision: to “give wings to life” by supporting those navigating the challenges of loss and advocating for organ donation awareness. Through various programs and services, Fundación Stefano addresses the multifaceted needs of grieving families and victims of violence while fostering a culture of compassion and resilience.

Fundación Stefano offers a wide range of services to support individuals and families during some of life’s most challenging moments:
Raising Awareness about Organ Donation
The Foundation educates communities about the importance and impact of organ and tissue donation, spreading a message of hope and solidarity. “Registering as an organ donor is a gift that keeps on giving,” the organization emphasizes.
Family Healing Center
The Family Healing Center is a cornerstone of the Foundation’s work. It provides clinical social work, psychology, thanatology, art therapy, and alternative therapies to grieving families. Services include individual and family psychotherapy, grief counseling, and assistance with navigating legal and procedural complexities. Art therapy offers a creative outlet for channeling emotions, as the Foundation notes, “Art becomes a bridge to healing.”
Support in Grieving and Funeral Coordination
The Foundation’s team accompanies families from the moment a loved one is in a trauma center, offering practical and emotional support. They help create lasting memories, such as recording handprints, as part of the grieving process.
Preventing Violence through Youth Programs
Through initiatives like Stefano’s Angels and the Superhero School, Fundación Stefano addresses the prevention of child violence and fosters resilience in children and adolescents. These programs focus on empowering young participants by developing emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, and social justice awareness. “Every child has the power to be a superhero in their own story,” the Foundation shares.
