A Legacy of Community and Conservation
Fundación de Culebra is a pillar of education, conservation, and cultural preservation in Puerto Rico’s island municipality. Established in 1994 by Juan J. Romero Sanes and a dedicated group of Culebrenses, this nonprofit organization has spent more than 25 years working tirelessly “for the community, with the community.” As a 501(c)(3) organization, its mission revolves around fostering self-management, protecting Culebra’s natural resources, and celebrating its rich history.

Protecting the Past, Educating the Future
A key initiative of Fundación de Culebra is its commitment to historic preservation. The organization restored two of Culebra’s most significant landmarks through meticulous efforts: the Culebrita Lighthouse and the Culebra Historical Museum, El Polvorín. In addition, the group has developed the Culebra Digital Archive, an extensive online resource filled with historical documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, videos, and interviews. This digital repository provides an invaluable glimpse into the island’s past and ensures that future generations remain connected to their heritage, reinforcing how historical preservation leads to community empowerment.
Investing in Youth Through Arts and Environmental Leadership
Recognizing that the island’s future rests with its younger generation, Fundación de Culebra has developed numerous youth-centered programs. Música Pa’ Culebra fosters musical education, Líderes Ambientales Culebrenses inspires environmental stewardship, and Culebra Saluda al Sol introduces students to the importance of solar energy. These initiatives educate and empower local youth to become conservation, sustainability, and arts leaders. Culebra’s beauty is its people, history, and future—be part of its story.

Expanding Cultural and Educational Opportunities
Beyond history and the environment, Fundación de Culebra is a champion of the arts. The organization has restored rooms in the old town school to host music, theater, and art workshops. By creating accessible spaces for creative expression, it ensures that Culebra’s cultural traditions continue to thrive.
Building Resilience Through Collaboration
Fundación de Culebra partners with various organizations to bolster its mission. Mercy Corps, for instance, is aiding in developing a resilience center to strengthen community preparedness. Additionally, internationally acclaimed Danish artist Thomas Dambo contributed to Culebra’s artistic landscape by creating Héctor El Protector, a massive sculpture crafted from recycled wood. These collaborations amplify Fundación de Culebra’s impact, bridging local and global efforts to protect and uplift the island community.
A Community Effort: How You Can Help
“Our achievements are the achievements of our island, the volunteers, and financial support,” the organization states. Fundación de Culebra thrives through the dedication of its supporters. Whether donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness, every contribution helps sustain this vital work.
