Fundación Cortés is a private nonprofit organization based in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, established in 2012. Its mission is to educate and inspire through Caribbean art and the humanities, using culture as a bridge between education, wellness, and social transformation. As one of the island’s few institutions dedicated exclusively to Caribbean art, the foundation operates with the conviction that creativity can heal, connect, and empower communities.
Programs, Galleries, and Free Access
The foundation opens its doors to the public free of charge, welcoming visitors to two contemporary galleries featuring rotating exhibitions drawn from the renowned Colección Chocolate Cortés. These galleries showcase paintings, sculpture, and multimedia works from artists across the Caribbean and Latin America, encouraging dialogue about identity, migration, and shared heritage.
Beyond the exhibition space, Fundación Cortés runs community programs that blend art education with mental wellness. Through Educa Cortés, its flagship educational initiative, children, youth, and seniors engage in interactive workshops that combine artmaking with learning in subjects such as science, history, and self-expression.
In every sense, the foundation embodies accessibility—offering art as a public right rather than a privilege.
Building Networks for Impact
Fundación Cortés thrives through a network of collaborations that amplify its mission across sectors. Partnerships with schools, universities, senior centers, and community organizations enable the delivery of art-based educational programs throughout Puerto Rico. The foundation also works with wellness groups, women’s advocacy organizations, and corporate sponsors to ensure its programming reaches underserved populations.
A long-standing relationship with Chocobar Cortés, the family enterprise that shares its name, strengthens the institution’s sustainability and outreach. Collaborations with the Jazz Foundation of America and other cultural entities bring music, performance, and intergenerational dialogue into the gallery space. Together, these alliances exemplify a model of cultural leadership rooted in cooperation and social responsibility.
Educa Cortés, Exhibitions, and Workshops
At the core of Fundación Cortés lies Educa Cortés, a comprehensive educational platform that integrates art with emotional intelligence and academic development. This program has served thousands of children, teachers, and seniors, introducing creative tools to enhance learning, well-being, and community connection.
The foundation’s mental health initiative, El Arte del Bienestar, uses artistic practice to promote resilience, mindfulness, and self-care. Specialized workshops focus on grief recovery, stress management, and positive expression through painting, collage, and music. A companion project in agroecology integrates art with environmental education and sustainable living.
For women facing health challenges, particularly breast cancer, Fundación Cortés has designed empowerment workshops in partnership with national and local health organizations. These sessions combine creative expression with self-esteem and healing.
The foundation’s exhibitions—such as Provocaciones, featuring 53 artists from 18 countries—reveal the richness and complexity of Caribbean identity. Curated experiences like Martes de Arte, Chocolate y Vino, and Domingos de Bienestar Comunitario bring art, music, and dialogue into the community, turning gallery visits into shared acts of reflection and joy.
From Industrial Roots to Social Innovation
Fundación Cortés emerged from more than 90 years of cultural and philanthropic work by the Cortés family. Since 1929, the family enterprise has played an essential role in Puerto Rico’s social and economic fabric, supporting local agriculture, education, and culture. The foundation represents the evolution of that legacy—from business stewardship to community empowerment.
Established in the heart of Old San Juan, the foundation transformed a historic building into a space of learning and creativity. Over time, it expanded from an art gallery into a comprehensive cultural center that promotes cultural values, identity, self-sufficiency, social justice, and dignity. Its impact continues to grow through outreach to schools and senior communities, as well as partnerships across the Caribbean.
Art as Catalyst for Social Good
Art in Puerto Rico is not just an aesthetic experience—it is a tool for transformation. Fundación Cortés demonstrates how creativity can serve as a catalyst for education, healing, and inclusion. By integrating art into the lives of youth and elders alike, the foundation strengthens self-worth, empathy, and cultural pride.
In a society facing economic hardship, migration, and emotional strain, this work provides a vital refuge of inspiration and belonging. Through its art-driven social mission, Fundación Cortés continues to nurture the human spirit while preserving the Caribbean’s cultural memory.
Its programs remind communities that art is not a luxury but a necessity for collective well-being.
