Founded in 2009 by architect and self-taught artist Luis Alberto Rivera, Atelier del Mosaico is Puerto Rico’s premier institution dedicated to developing mosaic art. Rivera, born in the Bronx in 1956 and raised in Puerto Rico from age five, honed his mosaic skills at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, where he later became an instructor. His vision led to a workshop where enthusiasts could “paint with tiles, glass, and other materials,” emphasizing foundational art theories such as color theory, composition, and the interplay of light and shadow.

Advanced courses delve into bas-relief mosaics, where students elevate elements from a two-dimensional surface using cement-covered compressed foam and mosaic sculpture, incorporating materials like tile, glass, and metals. In March 2015, a group from the atelier participated in a Mosaic U.S. Conference through the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA), marking their first involvement in such an event.
